Matthew 6: 1-4<\/h3>\n

1 <\/span>\u201cBe careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them.\u00a0If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cSo when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.<\/span><\/span>\u00a03\u00a0<\/sup>But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,<\/span><\/span>\u00a04\u00a0<\/sup>so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Matthew 6: 19- 21<\/h3>\n

Treasures in Heaven<\/span><\/h4>\n

19\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cDo not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,\u00a0where moths and vermin destroy,\u00a0and where thieves break in and steal.<\/span><\/span>\u00a020\u00a0<\/sup>But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,\u00a0where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.<\/span><\/span>\u00a021\u00a0<\/sup>For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Matthew 6: 24<\/h3>\n

24\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cNo one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.<\/p>\n

The Rich and the Kingdom of God<\/span><\/h4>\n

16\u00a0<\/sup>Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, \u201cTeacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

17\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhy do you ask me about what is good?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0Jesus replied.\u00a0\u201cThere is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

18\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhich ones?\u201d he inquired.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus replied,\u00a0\u201c\u2018You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery,\u00a0you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony,<\/span><\/span>\u00a019\u00a0<\/sup>honor your father and mother,\u2019\u00a0and \u2018love your neighbor as yourself.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

20\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cAll these I have kept,\u201d the young man said. \u201cWhat do I still lack?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

21\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered,\u00a0\u201cIf you want to be perfect,\u00a0go, sell your possessions and give to the poor,\u00a0and you will have treasure in heaven.\u00a0Then come, follow me.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

22\u00a0<\/sup>When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.<\/span><\/p>\n

23\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus said to his disciples,\u00a0\u201cTruly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich\u00a0to enter the kingdom of heaven.<\/span><\/span>\u00a024\u00a0<\/sup>Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

25\u00a0<\/sup>When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, \u201cWho then can be saved?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

26\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus looked at them and said,\u00a0\u201cWith man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

27\u00a0<\/sup>Peter answered him, \u201cWe have left everything to follow you!\u00a0What then will there be for us?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

28\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said to them,\u00a0\u201cTruly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne,\u00a0you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.<\/span><\/span>\u00a029\u00a0<\/sup>And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife\u00a0or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.<\/span><\/span>\u00a030\u00a0<\/sup>But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mark 10: 17-31<\/h3>\n

The Rich and the Kingdom of God<\/span><\/h3>\n

17\u00a0<\/sup>As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees\u00a0before him. \u201cGood teacher,\u201d he asked, \u201cwhat must I do to inherit eternal life?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

18\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhy do you call me good?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0Jesus answered.\u00a0\u201cNo one is good\u2014except God alone.<\/span><\/span>\u00a019\u00a0<\/sup>You know the commandments: \u2018You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

20\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cTeacher,\u201d he declared, \u201call these I have kept since I was a boy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

21\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus looked at him and loved him.\u00a0\u201cOne thing you lack,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he said.\u00a0\u201cGo, sell everything you have and give to the poor,\u00a0and you will have treasure in heaven.\u00a0Then come, follow me.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

22\u00a0<\/sup>At this the man\u2019s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.<\/span><\/p>\n

23\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,\u00a0\u201cHow hard it is for the rich\u00a0to enter the kingdom of God!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

24\u00a0<\/sup>The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again,\u00a0\u201cChildren, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!<\/span><\/span>\u00a025\u00a0<\/sup>It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

26\u00a0<\/sup>The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, \u201cWho then can be saved?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

27\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus looked at them and said,\u00a0\u201cWith man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

28\u00a0<\/sup>Then Peter spoke up, \u201cWe have left everything to follow you!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

29\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cTruly I tell you,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0Jesus replied,\u00a0\u201cno one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel<\/span><\/span>\u00a030\u00a0<\/sup>will fail to receive a hundred times as much\u00a0in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields\u2014along with persecutions\u2014and in the age to come\u00a0eternal life.<\/span><\/span>\u00a031\u00a0<\/sup>But many who are first will be last, and the last first.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mark 12:13 – 17<\/h3>\n

Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar<\/span><\/h4>\n

13\u00a0<\/sup>Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians\u00a0to Jesus to catch him\u00a0in his words.<\/span>\u00a014\u00a0<\/sup>They came to him and said, \u201cTeacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren\u2019t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?<\/span>\u00a015\u00a0<\/sup>Should we pay or shouldn\u2019t we?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But Jesus knew their hypocrisy.\u00a0\u201cWhy are you trying to trap me?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0he asked.\u00a0\u201cBring me a denarius and let me look at it.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a016\u00a0<\/sup>They brought the coin, and he asked them,\u00a0\u201cWhose image is this? And whose inscription?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCaesar\u2019s,\u201d they replied.<\/span><\/p>\n

17\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus said to them,\u00a0\u201cGive back to Caesar what is Caesar\u2019s and to God what is God\u2019s.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And they were amazed at him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark 6: 7 –\u00a0 13<\/h3>\n

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve<\/span><\/h4>\n

Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.<\/span>\u00a07\u00a0<\/sup>Calling the Twelve to him,\u00a0he began to send them out two by two\u00a0and gave them authority over impure spirits.<\/span><\/p>\n

8\u00a0<\/sup>These were his instructions:\u00a0\u201cTake nothing for the journey except a staff\u2014no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.<\/span><\/span>\u00a09\u00a0<\/sup>Wear sandals but not an extra shirt.<\/span><\/span>\u00a010\u00a0<\/sup>Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.<\/span><\/span>\u00a011\u00a0<\/sup>And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet\u00a0as a testimony against them.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

12\u00a0<\/sup>They went out and preached that people should repent.<\/span>\u00a013\u00a0<\/sup>They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil\u00a0and healed them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark 12: 41 – 44<\/h3>\n

The Widow\u2019s Offering<\/span><\/h4>\n

41\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put\u00a0and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts.<\/span>\u00a042\u00a0<\/sup>But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.<\/span><\/p>\n

43\u00a0<\/sup>Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said,\u00a0\u201cTruly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.<\/span><\/span>\u00a044\u00a0<\/sup>They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything\u2014all she had to live on.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 8: 1 – 15<\/h3>\n

The Parable of the Sower<\/span><\/h4>\n

8\u00a0<\/span>After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.\u00a0The Twelve were with him,<\/span>\u00a02\u00a0<\/sup>and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene)\u00a0from whom seven demons had come out;<\/span>\u00a03\u00a0<\/sup>Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod\u2019s\u00a0household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.<\/span><\/p>\n

4\u00a0<\/sup>While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable:<\/span>\u00a05\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cA farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up.<\/span><\/span>\u00a06\u00a0<\/sup>Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture.<\/span><\/span>\u00a07\u00a0<\/sup>Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants.<\/span><\/span>\u00a08\u00a0<\/sup>Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When he said this, he called out,\u00a0\u201cWhoever has ears to hear, let them hear.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

9\u00a0<\/sup>His disciples asked him what this parable meant.<\/span>\u00a010\u00a0<\/sup>He said,\u00a0\u201cThe knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you,\u00a0but to others I speak in parables, so that,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018though seeing, they may not see;<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>though hearing, they may not understand.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

11\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThis is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.<\/span><\/span>\u00a012\u00a0<\/sup>Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.<\/span><\/span>\u00a013\u00a0<\/sup>Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.<\/span><\/span>\u00a014\u00a0<\/sup>The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life\u2019s worries, riches\u00a0and pleasures,<\/strong> and they do not mature.<\/span><\/span>\u00a015\u00a0<\/sup>But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 12: 13-21<\/h3>\n

The Parable of the Rich Fool<\/span><\/h4>\n

13\u00a0<\/sup>Someone in the crowd said to him, \u201cTeacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

14\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus replied,\u00a0\u201cMan, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a015\u00a0<\/sup>Then he said to them,\u00a0\u201cWatch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

16\u00a0<\/sup>And he told them this parable:\u00a0\u201cThe ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.<\/span><\/span>\u00a017\u00a0<\/sup>He thought to himself, \u2018What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

18\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThen he said, \u2018This is what I\u2019ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain.<\/span><\/span>\u00a019\u00a0<\/sup>And I\u2019ll say to myself, \u201cYou have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.\u201d\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

20\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBut God said to him, \u2018You fool!\u00a0This very night your life will be demanded from you.\u00a0Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

21\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThis is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 12: 32-34<\/h3>\n

32\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cDo not be afraid,\u00a0little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.<\/span><\/span>\u00a033\u00a0<\/sup>Sell your possessions and give to the poor.\u00a0Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven\u00a0that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.<\/span><\/span>\u00a034\u00a0<\/sup>For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Luke 16:13<\/h3>\n

Luke 16: 19 -31<\/h3>\n

The Rich Man and Lazarus<\/span><\/h4>\n

19\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThere was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.<\/span><\/span>\u00a020\u00a0<\/sup>At his gate was laid a beggar\u00a0named Lazarus, covered with sores<\/span><\/span>\u00a021\u00a0<\/sup>and longing to eat what fell from the rich man\u2019s table.\u00a0Even the dogs came and licked his sores.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

22\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThe time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham\u2019s side. The rich man also died and was buried.<\/span><\/span>\u00a023\u00a0<\/sup>In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.<\/span><\/span>\u00a024\u00a0<\/sup>So he called to him, \u2018Father Abraham,\u00a0have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

25\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cBut Abraham replied, \u2018Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things,\u00a0but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.<\/span><\/span>\u00a026\u00a0<\/sup>And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

27\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cHe answered, \u2018Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family,<\/span><\/span>\u00a028\u00a0<\/sup>for I have five brothers. Let him warn them,\u00a0so that they will not also come to this place of torment.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

29\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cAbraham replied, \u2018They have Moses\u00a0and the Prophets;\u00a0let them listen to them.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

30\u00a0<\/sup>\u201c\u2018No, father Abraham,\u2019\u00a0he said, \u2018but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

31\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cHe said to him, \u2018If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
