7 <\/strong>The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus 2 <\/sup>and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 <\/sup>(The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4 <\/sup>When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 <\/sup>So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, \u201cWhy don\u2019t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 <\/sup>He replied, \u201cIsaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018These people honor me with their lips,
    but their hearts are far from me.
7 <\/sup>They worship me in vain;
    their teachings are merely human rules.\u2019<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 <\/sup>You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.\u201d<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 <\/sup>And he continued, \u201cYou have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! 10 <\/sup>For Moses said, \u2018Honor your father and mother,\u2019 and, \u2018Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.\u2019 11 <\/sup>But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)\u2014 12 <\/sup>then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 <\/sup>Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.\u201d<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n

14\u00a0<\/sup>Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said,\u00a0\u201cListen to me, everyone, and understand this.\u00a015\u00a0<\/sup>Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.\u201d\u00a0<\/mark>[16]\u00a0<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

17 <\/sup>After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. 18 <\/sup>\u201cAre you so dull?\u201d he asked. \u201cDon\u2019t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? 19 <\/sup>For it doesn\u2019t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.\u201d<\/mark> (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

20 <\/sup>He went on: \u201cWhat comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 <\/sup>For it is from within, out of a person\u2019s heart, that evil thoughts come\u2014sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 <\/sup>adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 <\/sup>All these evils come from inside and defile a person.\u201d<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n
